Ryan Watts, a defensive back selected in the sixth round, was signed by the Steelers to a four-year contract. Watts, a University of Texas player, was chosen with the 195th overall pick.

Watts transferred from Ohio State and played two seasons at Texas. He started 23 of the 24 games he played in with the Longhorns and totaled 89 tackles, 63 of which were from single stops. In addition, he had one interception, seven passes defensed, five tackles for a loss, and one sack.

“Just his body of work,” is what Coach Mike Tomlin finds appealing about Watts. “He is a tall man. He has good running form. He is adaptable in his job. He has an advantage when playing. Thus, those are a few of the actual, palpable explanations.”

In 11 games in 2023, he racked up 38 tackles, 30 of which were single stops. He also added a tackle for a loss and three passes defensed.

He was named honourable mention All-Big 12 Defensive Newcomer Player of the Year in 2022 and was selected by the league’s coaches as an All-Big 12 player. on 2022, he was also included on the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honour Roll (spring 2022). He was also chosen to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team.

He participated in 19 games throughout his two seasons at Ohio State. In 2020, he assisted Ohio State in winning the Big Ten, the Sugar Bowl, and a spot in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game.

Watts acknowledged he still has a lot to prove, but he said it meant the world to hear from the Steelers on draft night.

Watts remarked, “It was amazing.” “I had the impression that my efforts had finally paid off. I have to give thanks to God for putting me in this situation. I experienced numerous difficulties. All I want to do is come here and be a part of a home at last, so I can start to work and end the odds.
