A former NFL player gave more than $1 million to Alabama A&M University (AAMU), his alma school, on May 3 to assist student scholarships.
HBCU Gameday reports that former Pittsburgh Steeler John Stallworth gave a speech at Alabama A&M’s spring commencement last week and then gave the school a $1,214,721.00 cheque.
Having won four Super Bowls, Stallworth, who received his degree from AAMU in 1974, is also inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame (2002).
According to him, “playing football was never the end goal.” “Being a business owner was my dream. I took football as my means of transportation there. After earning my business bachelor’s degree from A&M, I went back during the off-season to complete my MBA in order to fulfil my dream of starting my own company.
Additionally, he had a message for the 2024 grads getting ready to start their jobs after graduation.
“Everything that happens in your life, class of 2024, shapes who you will become.” We are influenced by both the highs and the lows,” he remarked. “If we’re really honest with ourselves, whether we’re reflecting on the past four or fifty years, I think we can all agree that the high points and low points—those moments we were grateful to have survived and the times we wished would never come again—give us a better understanding of who we are.”
Stallworth was a wide receiver in the NFL, with 8,723 yards and 63 touchdowns on 537 grabs. In 1979, he was named to the first team of the NFL All-Pro, and in 1984, he won the NFL Comeback Player of the Year.
From 1974 until his retirement in 1987, Stallworth was a member of the Steelers for his whole NFL career. In 2017, he was admitted to the Pittsburgh Steelers Hall of Honour.
