Gary Neville has voiced his concerns over Manchester City’s recent performance, suggesting that the reigning Premier League champions are showing signs of “declining” form. The former Manchester United defender turned pundit pointed to a variety of factors, but notably singled out the lackluster performances of one key player as a major cause of the team’s struggles.
Manchester City, who had dominated the domestic and European scenes in recent seasons, have been experiencing a dip in form over the last few weeks. The team, under Pep Guardiola’s stewardship, has often been praised for its attacking prowess and tactical discipline. However, several of their recent matches have seen them struggle to break down opposition defenses, while defensive lapses have crept into their game.
Speaking on Sky Sports after City’s 1-1 draw against Liverpool, Neville made no attempt to hide his concerns. “Manchester City’s form is undeniably in decline. It’s not just a blip, this is a trend that has been developing over several weeks,” Neville stated. “There’s a lack of sharpness in their play, and a real vulnerability in their defense that was never there in the past.”
Neville went on to explain how City’s reliance on key players has become more apparent this season. “In recent years, City had the luxury of relying on a number of world-class players who could step up when needed,” he continued. “However, this season, there’s one player who stands out for me as being pivotal to their decline.”
The player Neville referred to was none other than Erling Haaland. The Norwegian striker, who had an explosive debut season with City, has been far less effective this year. After scoring 36 goals in the 2022-2023 Premier League season, Haaland has struggled to maintain that form in the current campaign.
Haaland’s inability to find the back of the net with the same consistency as last season has been a noticeable issue for Guardiola’s men. In fact, Haaland has only scored five goals in the Premier League so far this season, which pales in comparison to his scoring feats last year.
Neville argued that the lack of goals from Haaland has affected the overall attacking dynamics of the team. “City’s game revolves around creating chances for Haaland, but when he isn’t firing, their attacking play looks predictable and easy to defend against,” Neville said. “Haaland needs to get back to his best if City want to reclaim their dominance.”
Haaland has been receiving criticism from various pundits and fans for not living up to expectations this season, with some questioning whether the striker is struggling to adapt to Guardiola’s tactical approach. However, Neville believes that Haaland is not solely to blame. “It’s not just about him, though. In addition to Haaland’s dip in form, Neville pointed out the growing vulnerabilities in City’s defense. Neville didn’t shy away from discussing Guardiola’s role in the team’s struggles. While he acknowledged the immense success Guardiola has brought to the club, he questioned whether the manager’s tactical tweaks have been contributing to the team’s difficulties. “Guardiola is a genius, but even he has his flaws. His insistence on playing out from the back can be risky, and when you don’t have your best players on top form, it can cost you,” Neville said.

While many expect City to bounce back, Neville’s comments highlight the challenges they face, especially with key players not performing at the level that made them so dominant last season.
