Newcastle were unable to spend anything in the January window as their only signing was 18-year-old Alfie Harrison, but the summer could be a completely different story.
A new report from Foot Mercato has claimed that Rafael Leao has a release clause of around £150m that is only valid in July every year.
Newcastle have great competition for ‘outstanding’ talent
With the news emerging that Kylian Mbappe looks set to join Real Madrid, PSG have now identified Leao as one of their main targets to replace the Frenchman in the summer.
If they believe that the winger is their priority signing in six months time then Newcastle will find it very difficult to compete with their level of wealth and the European football they can offer the 24-year-old.
The Portuguese international has proven during his time with AC Milan that he’s a top talent around Europe and it’s now wonder that he’s in such high demand, it’s just whether or not clubs will be able to afford him.
Newcastle’s attack would be unbelievable with Leao
Newcastle have already witnessed first hand what kind of player Leao is from their meetings in the Champions League this season where he definitely should have scored at least one goal.
Having him on the right side of the attack with Anthony Gordon down the left and Alexander Isak through the middle could potentially be the best front three in the Premier League.
It would obviously take a lot to secure him, probably most of this summer’s budget, but for Newcastle fans it’s nice to sit and daydream about what next season could look like after a very frustrating couple of months.
For now, all they can do is admire Leao from afar and hope that when the time comes they won’t have to pay as much as £150m for his talents
