This week, the St. Louis Cardinals completed their first big offseason signing, inking right-hander Kyle Gibson to a one-year contract. Gibson, who attended Missouri, lives only 40 minutes from Busch Stadium and has the opportunity to spend more time at home. One of the considerations in his decision to join the Cards was his ability to win.

“It’s only 40 minutes, door to door, to Busch Stadium,” Kyle Gibson remarked over the phone Wednesday afternoon. “Being able to be home, help the kids get to school, and sometimes be there for bedtime was a big part of it.” Baseball practice is held in the morning on weekends. All the various things I’ve been missing out on. Gives me the opportunity to do so.”

“Just where I’m in my career, and I have no idea how many more years I’m going to play, so I want to have a chance to win in each of them,” Gibson said in a statement. “I want to have a chance to make the playoffs and compete for a return trip to the World Series.” It was a lot of fun doing it with Philadelphia (in 2022) and having a season like we did in Baltimore last year. Getting back to the playoffs and winning the division is something I’d like to do again. St. Louis is a franchise with ownership, a front office, and a fan base that expects that kind of culture and season every year.”

Kyle Gibson revealed that he isn’t concerned about the Cardinals’ 2023 season since he believes this team has a winning attitude. This past season, he pitched for the Baltimore Orioles, who won the AL East but fell in the ALDS. He had a 4.73 ERA and a 15-9 record.

Gibson, while hardly an ace, should be a welcome addition to a St. Louis rotation that recently lost Adam Wainwright to retirement. Lance Lynn was also reunited with the Cardinals.
