Derrick White discusses his discussions with the Celtics regarding a potential contract extension and whether he expects a deal to be done before the season begins.
Since the completion of last season, the Boston Celtics have signed numerous key players to contract extensions. Will the next one be Derrick White?
According to Adam Himmelsbach of the Boston Globe, extension talks between the Celtics and White’s representatives “continue.” Under the CBA, both parties have until October 23 to reach an agreement. If no agreement is reached by then, they will be forced to wait until after the 2023-24 season to finalise an extension.
White was asked about the claim at the Celtics’ practise facility on Tuesday.
“I love it here,” stated White. “It’s been a pleasure to be here as a Celtic.” That won’t alter whether I sign before or after the season. If that occurs, terrific; if not, I’m still looking forward to the season.”
During the 2021-22 season, the Celtics acquired White in a deal with the San Antonio Spurs, and he quickly became a member of the team’s core.
He is a skilled all-around player who can score, start or come off the bench, defend well, and play/defend many positions. Last season, White averaged 12.4 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game while shooting 38.1 percent from 3-point range and making the NBA’s All-Defensive second team.
He is in the third year of a four-year, $70 million contract extension with the Spurs. So, if White signs a contract extension with the Celtics now or after the current season, it won’t begin until the 2025-26 season.
During the offseason, the Celtics agreed contract extensions with Jaylen Brown (five years, $304 million), Kristaps Porzingis (two years, $60 million), and Payton Pritchard (four years, $30 million).
