Diego Carlos, a defender for Aston Villa, is now questionable for the match against Crystal Palace due to an injury he acquired prior to the international break.

According to the Express & Star, Unai Emery might not have Carlos available against the Eagles. The 30-year-old’s hamstring issue from last Sunday’s away game against Liverpool is still bothering him. At Anfield, Aston Villa would suffer a 3-0 loss.

Carlos had only been started by Emery twice this season prior to Aston Villa’s visit to Liverpool. The week prior, the Villans’ 3-1 victory at Burnley saw the center-half make his comeback to the starting lineup. He had only entered games for Newcastle United and Everton as a substitute.

Injuries continue to scupper Diego Carlos’ Aston Villa career

After battling to earn a spot in the starting lineup for the Spaniard, Carlos persuaded Emery that he deserved one. Carlos played just once and for 25 minutes out of a possible 13 Premier League games last season after recovering from his Achilles tendon rupture in March.

After acquiring Carlos from Sevilla for £26 million in June 2022 under Steven Gerrard, Aston Villa had high expectations for the enforcer. However, he didn’t play much until getting hurt badly in August of last year. After Gerrard was fired, it took Carlos some time to win Emery’s backing.

After shining out during his first preseason in Birmingham, Gerrard admired Carlos’ ‘no-nonsense’ approach. In order to win Emery over even more, the Brazilian will now try to resolve his most recent problem. However, Carlos is not certain to make a full recovery before Aston Villa plays Crystal Palace.

What has Unai Emery said about Diego Carlos’ injury?

When Carlos hobbled off in Aston Villa’s loss to Liverpool, Emery hoped the Brazilian would avoid a serious injury. The Villans manager acknowledged that the forced substitution of Leon Bailey at Anfield after 19 minutes weakened his Birmingham-native team on Merseyside.Diego Carlos | AVFC

According to Birmingham Live, Emery said, “Hopefully [it is] not a big injury.” “The injury to Diego Carlos, although not a serious injury, changed our game plan,” he continued.

“At that point, we were quite frail. Carlos may be part of a strategy to bolster the defense with Matty Cash, Pau Torres, and Lucas Digne.
