‘I thought’: Roy Hodgson gives his honest verdict on Wolves after yesterday’s 3-2 result

Wolves were defeated again in the Premier League yesterday, this time by Crystal Palace.

Wolves left the capital empty-handed, losing the game in the closing stages.

Odsonne Edouard scored twice each side of Ebere Eze to help the Eagles win 3-2.

Wolves got the game back to 1-1 through substitute Hwang Hee-chan.

But some slack defending allowed Edouard and Eze to put the game out of Wolves’ reach.

Matheus Cunha scored right at the death, but it was nothing more than a consolation.

It was a frustrating day at the office – but Palace manager Roy Hodgson was actually quite complimentary about Wolves after the game…

Gary O’Neil was pleased with his side arriving in the box yesterday.

Wanderers may have scored twice yesterday, but there were plenty of chances to strike earlier in the game.

But Wolves impressed Hodgson, who said (cpfc.co.uk): “It’s been a good afternoon because we won.” It wouldn’t have been a pleasant afternoon if we hadn’t, because I believe many of the things we didn’t do today were things we didn’t want to see from the squad.

“I thought Wolves were very good, so I believe we relied on those three very good goals and a much better second-half performance.”

Wolves have issues at both ends

The focus is usually always on Wolves’ end product. Yesterday, it was poor again.

It has been a long standing issue, and undoubtedly it’s a major thing that Gary O’Neil needs to address.

But so far this season, it has been evident that Wolves are weak defensively.

Craig Dawson and Max Kilman haven’t started particularly well, and so the manager needs to think about that too.

Perhaps adding Toti Gomes to the backline, and then using wing-backs, could be something to consider
