Heroic at Old Trafford, £39m Wolves star may now face the chop from O’Neil
Wolves fans started the week with a surprising sense of optimism, despite a defeat to Manchester United.
Gary O’Neil’s side were superb at Old Trafford, and really deserved a least a point from the game.
On Saturday, fans were upbeat and positive just ahead of the game with Brighton.
But 90 minutes later, the mood around the club had changed once again.
The Seagulls ran out 4-1 winners and really punished Wolves for poor finishing in the first-half, and lax defending in the second.
It was such a shame. Brighton are a great side, but the game could have been so different.
There were a number of players who were great on Monday, but just really poor yesterday.
And one player who had perhaps the biggest gap between his two performances of the week was Nelson Semedo.
Nelson Semedo struggled against Brighton
Semedo was absolutely outstanding at Old Trafford.
But against Brighton he was like a completely different player.
He was all over the shop defensively, and didn’t really have any impact for Wolves going forwards.
To be fair, a lot of right-backs will struggle going up against Kaoru Mitoma this season.
But after seeing him against United, Wolves fans were rightly feeling really good about Semedo.
Frustratingly, he just does not seem to be able to generate consistency.
And now, so poor was he against the Seagulls, Semedo might just face being benched.
Matt Doherty may tempt Gary O’Neil
We shall see now how ruthless Gary O’Neil is.
Semedo’s display against Brighton could not have been any more opposite to his showing at Old Trafford.
It is so frustrating because we all know that he can be a great full-back.
The consistency remains an issue for the £29 million man, and one wonders if O’Neil may already be tempted to bring Matt Doherty into the starting XI.
Doherty looked fairly lively in pre-season, and will be determined to oust Semedo from the starting XI. He has made it clear he hasn’t come back to Wolves to be playing second fiddle to anyone.
If Semedo does get a chance to redeem himself against Everton, then he will need to really make his opportunity count.
