Star receiver Justin Jefferson of the Minnesota Vikings made his first return to action today after missing a significant portion of the season with a hamstring injury. He made his debut tonight against the Las Vegas Raiders and caught a few passes. But a Raiders defender gave him a strong blow to the back on his second catch of the game, forcing him to leave the game hurt and head to the locker room.

UPDATE: Jefferson has now been ruled out.

With a chest ailment, the receiver’s official comeback to play is uncertain. For everyone, especially Vikings supporters who were anticipating his return to the field today, this is bad news. After the collision, Jefferson winced in pain and managed to drag himself to the sidelines before being brought into the blue medical tent. He was escorted to the training staff’s locker room shortly afterward so they could provide additional medical assistance.

Since quarterback Joshua Dobbs took over for the injured Kirk Cousins, Minnesota has been in desperate need of a real number one receiver, and Sunday was the first game the Vikings might have taken advantage of the opportunity. Jefferson is now hurt once more, and it doesn’t appear like he will be able to play the rest of the way.

Justin Jefferson - Minnesota Vikings Wide Receiver - ESPN

This season, Jefferson has amassed 571 receiving yards and three touchdowns in just five and a quarter games. Before suffering an injury at the start of October, he was on track to have yet another season with 1,000 yards or more. Now that he has sustained yet another injury, it will be extremely tough for the receiver to accomplish that objective once more.

Minnesota is now sitting in second place in the NFC North with a 6-6 record. At halftime, they are level with Las Vegas after neither team has scored a point. We’re still waiting to find out if Jefferson will be able to play in this game. As the game progresses, this ongoing situation will be updated.
