Raiders plot to hold down Jets’ struggling offense

The Las Vegas Raiders had unusual offensive success in their most recent game, but the New York Jets continued to struggle.

With rookie Aidan O’Connell at the helm, the Raiders (4-5) will try for their fourth win in six games when they welcome Zach Wilson and the Jets (4-4) on Sunday night.

Last Sunday, O’Connell earned his first career win as a starter, completing 16 of 25 passes for 209 yards in a 30-6 victory over the New York Giants.

Running back Josh Jacobs rushed for 98 yards and two scores as the Raiders cruised to win in interim head coach Antonio Pierce’s debut.

Davante Adams (team-leading 51 catches, 573 yards) of the Raiders has been kept under wraps of late, and the three-time All-Pro is sure to face more than his fair share of reigning AP Defensive Rookie of the Year Sauce Gardner this week.

“Sauce Gardner is a problem. … (A) very talented individual,” he remarked. “A lot of self-assurance, swagger, and ball-hawking.” With his length, he creates opportunities for defence. It also plays to the system’s strengths. He knows where he can get aid. Football player that is both intelligent and talented. Very gifted.”

Wilson completed 33 passes for a career-high 263 yards on Monday, but he and the Jets were unable to find the end zone in a 27-6 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. The loss ended the Jets’ three-game winning streak. The Jets have the NFL’s second-worst overall yardage average (272.9) and third-worst points per game (16.5).
