Odysseas Vlachodimos of Nottingham Forest helped Greece defeat Ireland 2-0 on Friday. The victory puts Gus Poyet’s team in a strong position to qualify for Euro 2024, and the performance of the custodian begs the question of Steve Cooper.
Vlachodimos joined Forest on the day of the transfer deadline. He joined the club from Benfica for over £10 million but has yet to make a single appearance for the club
The 29-year-old will not have come to the City Ground to sit on the bench. He’ll have left European football with Benfica determined
The head coach is currently in a pickle with Vlachdimos. On the one hand, he’ll be aware that he has two talented international goalkeepers, one of whom can play, but on the other, he’ll be left wondering what to do.
Matt Turner has been an extremely effective custodian at the City Ground. Vlachodimos, on the other hand, has extensive European experience and has played in the Champions League.
Against Ireland, the Forest custodian was probably called upon a little more than he would have liked. According to Who Scored, he made four saves throughout the game, which was more than Gavin Buzuna in the Ireland goal.
Vlachodimos may now receive Forest approval.
It appears like Greece’s number one will get an opportunity to play at some time. Forest will be pleased to have two good goalkeepers, but Vlachodimos is a number one and will want to play.
Cooper is now confronted with a dilemma. Does he remain for Luton’s visit, or does he twist and give the Greek custodian a chance to stake his own claim?
Cooper has always been dedicated to his players. However, he hasn’t been reluctant to make bold decisions, such as leaving Joe Worrall on the bench in recent weeks.
Vlachodimos was outstanding against Ireland on Friday. He appears to be a composed custodian, and Forest head coach Cooper now faces a critical decision.
