This morning, a key Jets player suffered a severe injury.

The Jets waived/injured Josh Baker after the hybrid tight/end fullback suffered a torn ACL in his right knee last night, according to the team.

Baker took a brutal blow to his knee on an incomplete pass in the end zone during the second quarter of last night’s preseason game against Carolina. Baker was helped off the field by the team’s medical staff and then carted to the locker room.

Baker had an MRI this morning to assess the extent of the damage. If he clears waivers, he will revert to the team’s injured reserve list.

“Josh would like 2 thank the Jets 4 the opportunity they gave him,” Baker’s agent, Howard Shatsky, wrote on Twitter.

Baker was an intriguing player for the Jets, likened by offensive coordinator Tony Sparano to Redskins tight end Chris Cooley. The tight end position has been hit by injuries, including Dustin Keller (hamstring), Jeff Cumberland (concussion) and Dedrick Epps, who went for X-Rays after the game for an undisclosed injury.

Coach Rex Ryan said he did not think Keller’s injury, suffered on the opening drive of last night’s game, was too serious. Cumberland, who sat out vs. Carolina, hopes to be back to practice today in some capacity (he could wear a red non-contact pinnie) and said he’ll be ready for the season opener.

The Jets also cut K Josh Brown and waived LB Damario Ambrose, WR Stanley Arukwe, WR Wes Kemp and RB Jeremy Stewart, bringing the roster down to 74. Teams had to be at 75 players by 4 p.m. today.
