His worried Stoke teammates watched as the medical team treated him on the pitch for a while before putting him on a stretcher and covering his face with a breathing mask.

Phil Jagielka, an experienced centre back who is 40 years old, took Wilmot’s place.

It is believed that Wilmot was taken directly to an ambulance at the bet365 Stadium parking lot.

Wilmot departs the pitch on a stretcher, according to Stoke’s tweet: “After a protracted delay. Wilmo, get better soon He is replaced by Jagielka.

“Ben Wilmot can’t continue and is being carried off,” West Brom continued. All the best to you, Ben.”

Social media was used by Potters supporters to express their support.

“Ben Wilmot, my heart is broken. All the best,” one person remarked.

Another person commented: “That was a massive miss by the referee there, and the Albion boy deserved at least a yellow. Ben Wilmot is having a lot of problems, but perhaps it’s just a concussion.

Not looking good for him, a third said.

And one more person added: “Get well soon, Ben!”

Despite attention from Arsenal, Liverpool, and Tottenham, Wilmot was selected by Watford in 2018 after progressing through the development ranks at his local club Stevenage.
