Everton knocked Aston Villa out of the EFL Cup on Wednesday night, thanks to goals from James Garner and Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Boubacar Kamara did pull a late goal back for Unai Emery’s Villa side, who rotated to help the Lions’ tight match schedule.

Everton, on the other hand, went as strong as they could after their superb 3-1 win at Brentford on Saturday evening, and Sean Dyche reaped the benefits. The Toffees manager will host his old club Burnley in the following round of the championship next month.

Villa fans were disappointed that their team did not do more to attack a competition in which they had realistic hopes of progressing further – especially when Premier League and European winners Manchester City were knocked out in the same round. This is what the visiting fans thought of Villa’s performance.

Phil M: Villa have been consistently outclassed.
Kantareller: Outstanding. It’s always terrifying when they’re invited back in with such a fortuitous goal, but it was too late.

Clarky the Cat: Blue boys, you’re doing great work. Well done, Dyche; it’s not easy to beat a cup competition master.

Illinois Blue: An unexpected but well-deserved victory. For 75 minutes, they dominated a normally very good Villa side.

Sam Hughes: When was the last time Villa suffered a home defeat? Once again, a superb performance.
