BirminghamLive gives you the latest Aston Villa news as Unai Emery reacts to his team’s Carabao Cup defeat to Everton.

Unai Emery spoke to the media after Aston Villa were eliminated from the Carabao Cup by Everton.

The Villa manager was displeased with his team’s performance, as home fans booed at half-time and full-time. Here’s everything Emery said to the press…

Unai, how did you take that?

“We are disappointed with the outcome, as well as with some of the mistakes we made tonight.” We did not want it. We’re working hard to expand the staff. We must utilise some players by giving them chances, opportunities, and minutes to gain confidence. That is how we must construct in order to achieve our optimum performance.

“We were sometimes well on the pitch today in 90 minutes, trying to keep playing like we were.” Trying to play in good positioning, advance, and into the box. We got off to a good start. They were powerful and waiting for us to make mistakes. We had Leon Bailey’s injury, which affected things slightly, and when they scored, we were anxious.

“In the locker room, we discussed taking control of the game like we were and trying to take a challenge in the second half to come back.” We made a rapid second error, they scored, and it became increasingly difficult to fight back. We did it because of our reaction and our desire to continue developing our style and combo. It wasn’t enough to win, but we came close and must accept that.”

Can you explain why John McGinn played at left-back?

“We had to give Lucas Digne a break. We did it because Alex Moreno was not yet ready to play; ideally, he is close to returning, but not yet. We had to deploy other players, and John McGinn performed admirably there.”

Were your players tired?

“I don’t think it’s tiredness. I don’t want to put all of our effort into each match, Sunday, Wednesday, and Saturday. That is why we sought to maintain a balance with other gamers. Attempting to compete and win the match. That is why I made certain changes and tried to manage 90 minutes while attempting to lessen the workload with some players.”

Is four competitions too many for the squad?

“We tried, but we lost the Carabao Cup today.” Of course, we must confront the first Premier League match. It is without a doubt the most crucial competition for us. We lost today, and it’s all over for us. We will now face Brighton on Saturday, hoping to recover fast since we require our best performances and efforts.”

Were you disappointed with players who were given a chance?

“I am not disappointed, but I am demanding of myself and must be demanding of the players, and they are aware of this.” For example, this was Leander Dendoncker’s first match since missing pre-season, and it’s not simple to recuperate and play in the way we want to. It is vital to offer him opportunities and time to take them. He’ll require more.

“Jhon Duran is young and needs to gain experience; he is playing and scoring goals.” I believe he is following the procedure I devised for him. Another substitution was John McGinn, who was supposed to play 45 minutes with Lucas Digne. I attempted to cut down on minutes with other players, but in the end
