Ipswich Town player concerned about hamstring injury while serving abroad: “Too risky”

Wes Burns, an Ipswich Town winger, injured his hamstring against South Korea and withdrew from Wales’ friendly against Latvia.
Burns, an Ipswich Town player, has started all five games for Kieran McKenna so far this season, helping the Tractor Boys reach 12 out of a potential 15 points.

He kept his spot in Rob Page’s Wales team for the most recent set of international games as well, but it has come to light that the 28-year-old won’t be able to play against Latvia after coming off the bench to play against South Korea last week.

Page explained to the media (through quotes from TWTD) that Burns has a hamstring issue and has been left behind while the rest of the squad flies to Riga.

Here’s what he had to say on the matter:

“Wes came on and he’s tweaked his hamstring.

We’ve got a duty of care to the player and for the club as well, so I think it was too risky to bring him. He’s pulled his hamstring, so it’s best off to send him back.”

Time will tell just what the extent of Burns’ injury is but fans will be keen to hear more, perhaps coming when Town boss McKenna previews this weekend’s trip against Sheffield Wednesday later this week.

While he was away
Burns’ absence would undoubtedly be a setback to McKenna and Ipswich Town, but if the Welshman needs some time to recover, he has choices in his roster to have a formidable starting lineup even without Burns.

The most likely candidate to make the starting XI is Omari Hutchinson. Sone Aluko and Marcus Harness, who played as a substitute in the first four Championship games before being totally left out of the lineup against Cardiff City, could also be considered.

Burns has only been able to tally one assist in his five outings so far this year. He was a productive goal and assist producer from the right in League One, and he’ll be motivated to add to that total to establish himself in the second tier.
