‘Fantastic’ international star player would be perfect signing for Derby County.

Derby County are once again in the market for a right sided defender, capable of playing wing-back or full-back, due to injuries sustained by summer signings Joe Ward and Kane Wilson.

According to Darren Witcoop, Reading are aiming to raise funds by shipping players such as Andy Carroll, Tom Holmes, Tom McIntyre and Andy Yiadom – the latter who has been credited with interest from the Rams.

Capped 26 times by Ghana since his debut in 2017, Yiadom can play anywhere across the defence or in a three at the back which would suit Paul Warne’s philosophy.

Prior to Ward and Wilson’s knocks, Derby’s links to the 31-year-old defender could have been viewed as farfetched, especially with Jake Rooney also being a reliable option at right-back. However, now it appears that the Ghanaian could be a perfect fit.

Warne recently mentioned the need for another right-wing-back in the absence of his aforementioned summer signings, so now would be the right time to strike a deal.

Yiadom has made 178 appearances since signing for the Royals from Barnsley in 2018, the large majority of which have come in the Championship, amassing to a wealth of experience that would be welcomed into the Rams’ set-up.

Former Reading boss Paul Ince labelled the former Tyke ‘fantastic’ last summer as he agreed a new three-year deal with the club. There are still two years remaining on that contract, so it is unclear what type of deal that Derby would look to pursue at this point.

Is Yiadom the man?

An issue that may arise would be the return of Ward and Wilson to the fold once they are back fit. It would leave four right-back options, a good selection headache for Warne, but near impossible to keep everybody happy.

Yiadom’s versatility could prove worthwhile here, however, should any other defensive injuries occur. It is unlikely that he would leave his starting role with the Royals to become a squad player with the Rams.

Time is ticking in the transfer window, so Derby must now act quick to finalise their squad before the close of play on September 1st.
