DONE DEAL: star signs new contract at Millwall and heads out on loan to League One – as….

The promising defender is set for his fourth loan move away from The Den

ALEX Mitchell has moved on a season-long loan to League One side Lincoln City after agreeing a new contract at Millwall.

The defender was on loan at St Johnstone in the Scottish Premiership last season and made appearances during pre-season for the Lions.

Now the 21-year-old is set for his fourth temporary move away from the club as he heads to Mark Kennedy’s Lincoln shortly after putting pen to paper on a new deal.

Millwall boss Gary Rowett thinks the move provides Mitchell with the chance to build on last season’s experiences in Scotland and get closer to the Lions’ first team.

He told NewsAtDen: “I think the key for us in the summer was thinking about how close is Al to playing games for us and starting games for us.

“And we felt that to get him to that level and building on that momentum from last season’s loan in Scotland, that if there was an opportunity in League One that we felt was a good opportunity, we were conscious that gets him closer to our first team if he does really well.

“So certainly for him it’s a great opportunity to show what he can do and if he does well at this next step for him, then either he’s going to be in our team or not in our team. So that’s the next little bit for him.

“And I think it’s important he signs a new deal before he goes because he’s a player that, long-term, has a really good opportunity to be part of what we’re doing.”

Mitchell’s first loan move came in the 2020-21 season when he made 10 appearances for Bromley.
