Chelsea could now bid to sign Diogo Costa from Porto – once Kepa Arrizabalaga completes his move to Real Madrid.

That is according to A Bola in Portugal.

So, what is the latest on Diogo Costa and Chelsea? Let’s take a look…

What’s the story?

Well, the Portugal international was said to be on Chelsea’s radar when Edouard Mendy left for Saudi Arabia in June – according to Record.

However, the Blues eventually decided to pursue a cheaper option in Robert Sanchez – a £25m deal was quickly wrapped up with Brighton for the Spain international.

Now – however – after Thibaut Courtois suffered a serious knee injury, Real Madrid are taking Kepa off Mauricio Pochettino’s hands, meaning Chelsea are back on the lookout for a new goalkeeper.

The Guardian believe Carlo Ancelotti is signing the Chelsea No.1 on a season-long loan, and Real Madrid will not have an option, or any obligation, to make the deal permanent next summer.

As a result of losing Kepa, Chelsea are looking at Costa once again.

A Bola believe the Blues have already made contact with Porto about signing the 23-year-old.

It is said that talks took place in June when Mendy left for Al Ahli, although Chelsea were put off by Costa’s €75m (£65m) release clause.

The Portuguese news outlet believe the Porto No.99 is not going anywhere unless that release clause is triggered.

Chelsea should only buy Diogo Costa if Real Madrid agree to sign Kepa permanently

In our view, spending £65m on Costa could cause problems later down the line – if Kepa ends up returning next summer as expected, that is.

With no loan or obligation to buy, Real Madrid can simply send the Spaniard back to west London next summer if he struggles, which would leave Pochettino with Sanchez, Costa and Kepa in his goalkeeping department.

That could cause issues, as all three sees themselves as starting options, so Chelsea should only invest £65m into Costa if they manage to offload Kepa and his massive £190,000-a-week wages for good.

Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as there is a lot going on in Chelsea’s goalkeeping department this summer.
