With the new Premier League season just over one week away, Newcastle United are closing in on their third senior signing of the summer.

After completing deals for Sandro Tonali and Harvey Barnes, the Magpies have been focussing on defensive reinforcements, and it looks like a breakthrough has been made.

Eddie Howe has been eager for the club to bring in Tino Livramento from Southampton, with the 20-year-old really keen to swap St Mary’s for St James’ Park.

It has been really difficult for Newcastle to agree a fee with the Saints, which has led to some frustration on Tyneside. However, it now looks like this transfer pursuit is going to have a happy endingReading v Southampton: Pre-Season Friendly

Newcastle finally agree Livramento deal with Southampton

According to Sky Sports, Newcastle have now agreed a deal to sign Livramento from Southampton.

There was some encouragement when it was reported that the defender was not going to be involved in Southampton’s first Championship game of the season this weekend, and it now looks like he won’t be a Saint for much longer.

With a deal now in place, you have to imagine it is only a matter of time before Livramento signs on the dotted line and joins Howe’s squad. Personal terms will surely not be an issue, with the youngster keen to make the move.

If Newcastle are quick then perhaps he could feature in this weekend’s Sela Cup at St James’ Park, but that is arguably wishful thinking on our part.Southampton v Bournemouth: Pre-Season Friendly

Signing Livramento will add more depth to the Newcastle defence, whilst also having an eye on the future. He will provide cover for Kieran Trippier, before eventually replacing the 32-year-old when the time comes.

It looks set to be another smart signing by the Magpies, who are on course to have enjoyed a very productive summer transfer window.

Once this deal is finalised, Howe’s next aim will be to bring in a right-sided centre-back.
