SAD NEWS: It’s Over. “Matt Moylan declares his retirement from rugby league

Former Cronulla and Penrith star Matt Moylan has announced his retirement from rugby league after a one-year stint with the Leigh Leopards in the English Super League.

The 33-year-old was released a year early from his deal with the Sharks at the end of last year.

Immediately signing a two-year deal with the 2023 Challenge Cup champions, Moylan scored six tries and 55 goals in 26 games this season.

After making his debut for the Panthers in 2013, Moylan went on to score 37 tries and 33 goals across 191 NRL games for Cronulla and Penrith.
The fullback turned five-eighth also featured for the Blues in all three games of the 2016 Origin series and represented Australia in one Test match in the same year.
Moylan played five seasons with the Panthers before joining the Sharks in 2018.
In 2023, Moylan fell out of Cronulla’s starting side in the second half of the season after being demoted for Braydon Trindall as Nicho Hynes’ halves partner.

Moylan then switched to Leigh to join forces with Lachlan Lam in the halves but has made the “difficult” decision to finish his career rather than return for a second season.
“It’s been a really difficult decision to call time on my career, but I’ve got to listen to my body and say enough is enough,” Moylan said in a statement
“I’ve had a great year at Leigh. I’m extremely grateful to the fans for the song they have sung to me this year, their support has been fantastic.
“It has been an honour to be part of a team that has reached the highest position in Super League that this club has been.
“The team is in a great place and I will enjoy watching them in my retirement.”
Despite being hampered by injuries in recent years, Moylan was named Leigh’s player of the year at the club’s end-of-season awards, as chosen by its members.
