Glen Kamara leaving Rangers for Leeds United is certainly not a “done deal” and while there is interest it is not an “imminent” prospect, says Jonny McFarlane in his latest transfer update.
Last Word on Sports had reported on 17 July that personal terms were agreed and speculation mounted when the Yorkshire Evening Post’s Graham Smyth called it a “doable” and “sensible” deal for around £4.5million, while reporting that the Whites have indeed looked at the transfer (20 July).
But the Finnish international midfielder is apparently not on the brink of a switch to Elland Road, and if he does leave Ibrox this summer it may not even be to the English Championship side.
McFarlane said on the Rangers Review Morning Briefing on Wednesday (26 July, 9m 30s): “When all the speculation was at it’s height and people were saying it was a done deal, you did ask about it and I did tell that wasn’t that case.
“I think it’s still got a little bit to run yet if that was to be the case regarding Leeds, and I think that there’s other clubs that are interested as well, so I don’t think you should take it as read that he’ll go there.
“But there is interest, there’s no doubt about that. But I don’t think that’s imminent, put it that way.”
On paper it looks like a transfer that makes sense for all involved so it is difficult not to assume it must happen sooner or later Chelsea, it looks like nothing is sure yet.The manager made it quite clear that Kamara, 27, was probably in line to moBut that isn’t always how it works in the transfer window, so while Rangers would love that money to help Michael Beale wrap up an impressive haul this summer, and Leeds still need midfield help despite the signing of Ethan Ampadu fromve on this summer when he said, via Rangers Review (31 May) “maybe he is one that has maybe been around here too long and maybe needs to re-bolt himself”.
Similarly, the former Dundee man has himself indicated that he is ready to leave Glasgow after four and a half years, telling the Pallokerho podcast on 12 June he’d “had a really good time” at Ibrox while offering a “no comment” on leaving.
So, if Leeds can come up with the money and offer him a new opportunity in England then the likelihood is he would take it as well as the club.
But if the likes of previously-linked Rennes [Mail on Sunday, 11 June p.100-101] are to be the ones who make the most concrete push to sign him it sounds like the door is still wide open for whoever wants to have a go.
How extensive his involvement might be should a suitable bid never be made must be in doubt, with Kieran Dowell already in and Jose Cifuentes on the way, so a departure appears necessary.
In other Rangers news, an expected Light Blues transfer might have collapsed, potentially costing Beale six figures off his budget.
