When David Gilbert was found flying low at the World Snooker Championship on Friday night, his followers were in stitches.
In Friday night’s evening session at the Crucible, Gilbert, 42, was losing to Kyrie Wilson in the semi-finals when he realised his flies were undone. The Englishman tried to set up his shot and swiftly adjusted.
Fans, however, weren’t blind to his antics; as he adjusted, a few in the audience laughed a little. Before Gilbert could fire his shot, he responded to the jeers by saying, “There ain’t much to see anyway!”
The BBC’s John Parrott, providing commentary, was equally astounded as the Crucible erupted into giggles. Aside from Dave Gilbert, that was a very funny joke, said the snooker icon. You can conjure up your own tales, but I won’t reveal what he said.”
One fan joked, “I did wonder why he said that lol.” A second person said, “Quote of the tournament!” in response.
“Lol. A third person said, “David Gilbert is making a funny little memorable moment.” “Dave Gilbert, the legend you are!” was said by another.
The World No. 31 defeated Stephen Maguire in the quarterfinals, having the tournament of his dreams. Even getting to the final eight after defeating the defending champion Luca Brecel in the first round was quite the journey.
Brecel acknowledged that he had faced challenges during the initial round due to an illness. He said: “I’ve lost my voice a couple of times and I’ve had headaches, a bit like Covid.”
As the evening went on, Gilbert witnessed Wilson distance himself from him, with The Warrior winning five straight frames. However, The Angry Farmer emerged victorious in the session, concluding with a century to trail 10–14 ahead of his return the following day.
