Pittsburgh Despite having possibilities in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers still need a centre on their roster. However, a source says the organisation may consider looking at a backup plan in case things don’t work out.
If the Steelers are unable to select a centre in the first round of the NFL Draft, Mark Kaboly of The Athletic believes they may consider signing former Miami Dolphins centre Connor Williams. They have so far brought in Jackson Powers-Johnson, Graham Barton, and Zach Frazier as possibilities for pre-draft visits.
“I don’t think it would help right now because he can’t practise. I don’t think they’ll move James Daniels there because he was too good of a right guard and he’s in a contract year, so let’s see what Herbig can do,” Kaboly stated on 93.7 The Fan. “If they bring someone else in, maybe put Spencer Anderson and those guys in there and see if they can succeed, or whoever else they bring in.” You always have the option to bring in Connor Williams as a backup if the answer is unmistakably no.”
Having recently suffered an ACL tear, Williams, 26, is not among the top prospects available in free agency. Nevertheless, in his NFL career, the former second-round selection has started 77 games.
In the event that the Steelers decide not to acquire a centre, Anderson or Nate Herbig may be considered as starters. Since neither of them is a natural centre, it is unclear how well they would perform in that capacity if given the chance.
