During the NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs need to keep adding to Patrick Mahomes’ supporting cast, whether they do so by aggressively trading up or staying put.

Sure, the Chiefs made it through with a receiving corps that led the league in intercepted passes, and Mahomes’ heroics against the 49ers produced a second straight Lombardi Trophy, but the receiving corps needs a lot of assistance if Kansas City is to become the first team in league history to win three straight titles. It wouldn’t be shocking in the slightest for Chiefs General Manager Brett Veach to try to add a receiver early in the NFL Draft, even after acquiring Marquise “Hollywood Brown” in free agency.

Kansas City Chiefs’ Ideal NFL Draft Target Revealed

Even if LSU’s quick Malik Nabers and Ohio State’s game-changing Marvin Harrison Jr. are well out of the Chiefs’ grasp, Kansas City may still select an explosive pass-catcher in the first round.
After analysing and projecting the best players for each of the 32 teams in the first round, Ryan Fowler of Bleacher Report identified LSU receiver Brian Thomas Jr. as the Chiefs’ top pick.

“While the team added Marquise Brown and has a long list of rotational pieces present,” Fowler writes for B/R. “Presenting the frame of Thomas for Patrick Mahomes to feed with targets is an intriguing prospect.

“Although Thomas was primarily used as a vertical threat at LSU, evolving at multiple depths while displaying an increased willingness to mix it up as a run-blocker will see his game evolve rapidly.”

It’s easy to envision Thomas stretching the field on the perimeter, but the reality is his size and frame give him the potential to win matchups from the slot and dominate in the red zone for Mahomes and the Chiefs.

Brian Thomas Jr. Scouting Report

Throughout his stint in Baton Rouge, Thomas more than demonstrated his ability to be a first-round prospect.

In three years of college, Thomas caught 127 receptions for 1,897 yards and 24 touchdowns against top-tier SEC opponents. With Mahomes at the centre of the Chiefs’ arsenal, Thomas would feel perfectly at home.

Thomas Jr., according to NFL Media’s Lance Zierlein, “presents an appealing combination of size, length, and speed. With experience working inside and outside.” Thomas occasionally acts like a route runner, but he lacks the agility, quickness, and bend that are necessary to improve.
