Pittsburgh NFL Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe, presenter of Nightcap, criticised Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson for an interview he just did with ESSENCE magazine.

Wilson talks about his experience as a black quarterback in the NFL and how he was one of the select few to win a Super Bowl in the interview. In the most recent podcast episode, Sharpe attacked Wilson, expressing his lack of gratitude for the remarks.

What function did Doug Williams serve then? The first quarterback of African American descent to make it to the Super Bowl, win it, and be named MVP,” Sharpe remarked to Chad Johnson, his co-host. “How about Shack Harris, then? Joe Gilliam, what about him? So what was done by Marlin Briscoe? Harry Jack? Steve McNair? Did they not open any doors? Michael Vick, Donovan McNabb? You were it?”

In response, Wilson has stated that there was more to his remarks than what Sharpe revealed.

“Let’s begin encouraging one another! Being a member of the NFL’s “Evolution of Black QBs” has been one of the most exciting experiences of my life. Complete context is always crucial! Happy for those that came before me. those who are in my company. and others who came after,” Wilson penned on X. “God is Good!”
