Field Yates of ESPN NFL Insiders is among many who do not believe that the Washington Commanders will select Michigan Wolverines quarterback J.J. McCarthy with the second overall pick in 2024 instead of North Carolina Tar Heels signal-caller Drake Maye or LSU Tigers quarterback Jayden Daniels.
Despite McCarthy’s reportedly climbing draft ranking, fellow ESPN NFL analyst Adam Schefter has consistently associated Daniels with the Commanders at the second choice.
Matt Miller, an ESPN draft analyst, is still of the opinion that Washington could surprise a lot of football fans on April 25.
Miller stated that he “can’t rule out the possibility that Washington has fallen in love with McCarthy following his pro day and its time spent with him individually.”
Some people seem to have forgotten that Washington might select Maye after the Chicago Bears select USC Trojans quarterback Caleb Williams with the first choice in the draft due to the intense intensity of the McCarthy hype.
Josh Edwards and Tom Fornelli of CBS Sports predicted in mock drafts updated this week that the Commanders will choose Maye and allow the New England Patriots to decide Daniels’ destiny at selection No. 3.
In the meantime, ESPN’s Jordan Reid stated in his article on Friday that he thinks Washington is stuck with a Daniels vs Maye situation.
Whether McCarthy really “may be QB1” for both Washington and New England coming into the second weekend of April is something outsiders can only speculate about.
Regarding the Commanders’ draft plans, the one thing that seems clear is that they will not be surrendering pick No. 2 to obtain assets required for their ongoing rebuild.
