The Green Bay Packers have reportedly signed cornerback Gemon Green, only a few weeks before the 2024 NFL draft.
SI.com’s Bill Huber reported on Wednesday, April 10, that the Packers had signed Green.
“According to a source, Green recently was cleared following shoulder surgery,” Huber wrote in an email. “His workout in Green Bay was his first opportunity since being healthy, and he obviously did well enough to merit a longer look.”
While not a major signing, it is the Packers’ first significant move since acquiring veteran kicker Greg Joseph to battle with Anders Carlson in training camp.
Packers fans are focused on the impending draft, but general manager Brian Gutekunst is still making moves on the margins.
Who is Gemon Green?
Green is hardly a household name in the NFL, but college football fans may recognise his name.
Green, who is from DeSoto, Texas, was a 3-star high school recruit in 2018. He received hundreds of scholarship offers, including from prominent programmes such as Oregon, Texas, and Oklahoma.
Instead, Green relocated to the Midwest to play for the Michigan Wolverines. It took him some time to break into the starting lineup, but he stuck with it without transferring and was rewarded by the end of his college tenure.
Green did not play as a true freshman, but did play special teams as a sophomore. He became a starting cornerback as a junior in 2020, and by the time he went pro in 2020, he had 24 career starts for the Wolverines and was named All-Big Ten in 2022.
After coming just short of a national championship, Green declared for the 2023 NFL Draft. He measured 6’1″ and weighed 183 pounds, with a Relative Athletic Score (RAS) of 6.64 out of 10.
