The Dallas Cowboys are at a crossroads in terms of their immediate future.

Instead of extending Dak Prescott and freeing up salary cap money to recruit personnel to help them compete for the Super Bowl in 2024, they are allowing their franchise quarterback to play out his contract.

Prescott is projected to win this season despite having significantly less talent—due to players who left during free agency—than he did last season. In any case, he’s likely to leave and join another squad after 2024.

Five starters from 2023 have already left, including solid left tackle Tyron Smith and running back Tony Pollard. The Cowboys have added very little on the free-agent market and have refused to make the one move that could have kept the team intact while also demonstrating a new direction: firing Mike McCarthy and hiring a new head coach.

Instead, the Cowboys have decided to keep McCarthy and sit on their hands throughout free agency. And if the 2024 season fails as horribly as the 2023 season did, we’re likely in for a major roster overhaul. Why not just start now?
