The Cincinnati Bengals have opted to release Joe Mixon and have struck an agreement with running back Zack Moss.
Moss had a tremendous season in 2022, reaching career highs in several categories including carries, rushing yards, rushing touchdowns, touches, yards from scrimmage, and total touchdowns.
This outstanding performance won him a lucrative deal from the Bengals. Moss entered the NFL as a third-round choice by the Buffalo Bills in 2020, but was transferred to the Indianapolis Colts in 2022.
The Bengals’ decision to sign Moss Mixons resulted in the release of longtime starter Joe Mixon. Mixon had spent seven seasons as the Bengals’ primary rushing back.
In the 2023 season, he rushed for over 1,000 yards and nine touchdowns, demonstrating his significance to the squad. However, Moss’ breakout season and the possible cost savings
Moss will now join the Bengals and work to improve their running offence, which lacked explosiveness last season. The squad failed to make big plays in the running game, finishing 27th in the league in carries of 12 yards or more.
While Moss and Mixon had identical rates of carries for 10 or more yards, the Bengals will profit from the cap savings obtained by dismissing Mixon. The $5.8 million saved will help cover Moss’ pay for the first year.
The Bengals are making a huge move by bringing Moss in to replace Mixon. Moss’ breakout season and potential for development raise hopes for a more dynamic rushing offence in the following season.
