Given Buffalo’s dismal season and the team’s mounting turnover, some saw the Bills’ midseason decision to replace offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey as a desperation move.
It wouldn’t be accurate to state that the offensive production of the Bills has changed dramatically since Dorsey was fired, but it’s also not entirely coincidental that wins have begun to accumulate under new offensive coordinator Joe Brady. Brady’s switch to a more run-based strategy has relieved some of Allen’s arm strain. As a result of Stefon Diggs’ diminished role, other pass-catchers including Khalil Shakir and Dalton Kincaid have been given additional opportunities to participate in the offense.
One of the most memorable pictures from LSU’s 2019 championship run will always be of cherished coach Ed Orgeron hoisting the College Football Playoff trophy, but the Tigers needed to work as a team to establish themselves as one of the most formidable teams in the annals of sports history.
Brady had a major role in that. Brady was hired as LSU’s wide receivers coach and coordinator of the passing game prior to 2019; he was only 29 years old when the season began. During the 2017–18 season, when the Saints made a comeback to the NFC, he served as an offensive assistant. That two-year span saw the squad post a 24-8 record.
Although Brady was recognized for his role in revolutionizing the offense and was named the nation’s best assistant coach by the Broyles Award, Steve Ensminger continued to serve as LSU’s offensive coordinator. The future Baylor coach Dave Aranda oversaw the Tigers’ strong defense.
Brady played with an incredibly great bunch in Baton Rouge, but a quarterback doesn’t just go from 16 touchdown passes in one season to 60 the following without a lot of help, coaching included. Burrow was selected first overall in the 2020 NFL Draft because he did just that.
