NFL teams seeking for a new head coach are showing a lot of interest in Jim Harbaugh this offseason, but Michigan is determined to hang onto the guy who won the program’s first national championship in a century. Additionally, in the course of any prospective contract offer, Harbaugh is making an intriguing request of the university.

According to Yahoo Sports, Harbaugh is requesting contractual protection from any potential NCAA sanctions in the midst of his discussions with the university following his two consecutive three-game bans during the Wolverines’ title run.

Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh on recruiting struggles: 'It's hard to beat the cheaters'

Harbaugh is requesting specific language in his contract that would shield him from termination in the case of a suspension as part of a new agreement with the school.

That’s noteworthy because the NCAA is still looking into charges of sign-stealing, so there’s a chance he might get further punishment. At the close of 2023, the NCAA published a Notice of Allegations, which contained a Level I accusation against Harbaugh for allegedly providing false information to investigators about possible recruiting infractions.

To avoid the NCAA getting involved, Michigan banned Harbaugh for the first three games of the season, but it’s not clear if that would be sufficient to appease them.
