For their Monday night game against the Seattle Seahawks, the Philadelphia Eagles have decided that senior defensive assistant Matt Patricia, not defensive coordinator Sean Desai, will be calling plays from the sidelines.

Patricia, 49, coached the Detroit Lions from 2018 to 2020 before joining the Eagles this spring. He spent 15 years as the New England Patriots’ assistant coach, winning three Super Bowls, before and during his time with the Lions.

As the Patriots’ defensive coordinator, Patricia was a part of two victories, including the league record for fewest points allowed in 2016. Prior to joining the Eagles, he served as their offensive playcaller for the whole previous season.

Less than two months before Patricia left for the Arizona Cardinals, Jonathan Gannon was replaced by Sean Desai when he signed with the Eagles. Before serving as the Seahawks’ associate head coach and defensive assistant last year, Desai had the same role for one season in 2021 with the Chicago Bears.

According to current rumors, Desai is expected to play in Seattle. As per NFL Network, he is relocating to the coaching booth, where he previously called plays for the Bears two years ago. The Eagles, on the other hand, have made the call in silence and have not formally announced their decision.

The defensive funk began at home against the Buffalo Bills, when they were forced to win 37-34 in overtime thanks to a last-minute 59-yard field goal. However, they were outmatched 42–19 by the San Francisco 49ers in Philadelphia, and their luck turned around.

Last week, they lost badly again, this time against division rivals the Dallas Cowboys 33-13. As a result, both clubs finish the season with 10-3 records, earning the top two NFC East slots.

However, their issues with defense date back far further. Since Week 8, nobody has given up more yards per game than the Eagles, who average 428.2, and only the Washington Commanders have allowed more points per game than they average.

In spite of these dismal numbers, Philadelphia coach Nick Sirianni stated in public
