The St. Louis Cardinals want to leave the humiliation of their atypically disastrous 2023 season in the past. And, age worries notwithstanding, keeping first baseman Paul Goldschmidt around for the long haul could help them recover admirably in 2024.

Even though Goldschmidt is already 36 years old, he is still among the MLB’s best hitters. The Cardinals will need to keep him in town because he is the epitome of consistency in the major leagues. Considering that the veteran first baseman’s contract has just one year remaining, the Cardinals are currently attempting to negotiate a new agreement with him in order to minimize any potential complications.

Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the Cardinals “will approach” Paul Goldschmidt in order to start contract extension negotiations and perhaps reach a deal with him before the season starts. The executive management doesn’t seem to be ready to allow these discussions linger on and cast a shadow over the team, which is excellent news for Cardinals supporters.

Goold stated that talks might start closer to the start of Spring Training on February 22, so there might not be a deal in the works anytime soon.

The Cardinals would much rather handle contract extensions before to the start of the season, as they did with Miles Mikolas. Additionally, because Paul Goldschmidt is so vital to the team, they are afraid to take any action that may jeopardize their relationship with the star first baseman. The Cardinals “do not expect it to be a contentious,” as Derrick Goold said.
