The former Wyoming standout enters the portal after a two-season stint in Austin.

Following two seasons with the Longhorns, Texas wide receiver Isaiah Neyor is anticipated to enter the NCAA transfer portal. The 6-foot-3-inch, 215-pound receiver began his career at Wyoming, where he was an All-Mountain West standout after a 2021 season in which he hauled in 44 receptions for 878 yards and 12 touchdowns, but he tore his ACL during training camp in 2022 after moving to Texas.

According to On3, the Texas native will attempt to rediscover his earlier form somewhere else than the Forty Acres.

Neyor was expected to be a member of the receiver rotation in 2023, alongside Xavier Worthy, Jordan Whittington, and Adonai Mitchell as a big-bodied deep threat. Unfortunately, Neyor has not been able to fully recover from his knee injury in 2022.

“Isaiah physically is great, but when you have an injury like that, there’s a mental component to it as well,” Steve Sarkisian said after the Baylor game on Sept. 23. “I see some really good days and some days that don’t look so good.” The problem for him is finding that level of consistency in what he provides day in and day out, and we’re hopeful that we can get him there.”

Neyor appeared in just one game this season, taking eight snaps in the final moments of Texas’ season-opening win over Rice. Against the Owls, he grabbed one pass for 14 yards.

Prior to his injury, Neyor was one of the nation’s top deep threats. In 2021, he averaged just under 20 yards per reception with Wyoming and caught more than one-third of his targets that went 20 yards or more down the field.

However, with the injury and growth of true freshman receiver Johntay Cook, Neyor, along with fellow veteran Casey Cain, who revealed his decision to enter the transfer portal earlier this week, got lost in the shuffle.

The portal is an online database into which players’ names will be entered if they opt to pursue a move. Players contact their current school’s compliance office that they want their name entered into the portal; names normally appear within 48 hours. Coaches can search the database and contact any of the players who have registered.

Players can technically enter the portal at any time. However, unless they do so inside their sport’s official “windows,” they will be forced to miss one season. There are two windows in college football: one after the regular season and one after spring practice. The autumn gateway window opened one day after the conference championship games on Sunday, Dec. 3. It will be open for 30 days and will close at the end of the day on January 1, 2024.

Prior to this school year, players had 45 days after the end of the regular season to put their names into the portal. This fall, the NCAA changed the rule, reducing the timeframe to 30 days.

Is it necessary for a gamer to leave his school after accessing the portal?

No. Players occasionally remove their identities off the portal and continue to participate in their individual programs.

However, the decision to enter the portal is frequently accompanied by some level of displeasure on either the player’s or the program’s part. Most players that enter the portal do not return to their original school, and they are frequently kicked off the team as soon as they enter.

Jeff Choate, the newly hired Nevada head coach, checked a number of boxes when he joined Steve Sarkisian’s original Texas staff in 2021. Choate arrived at the Forty Acres with head coaching experience (a successful stint at Montana State where he led the Bobcats to a pair of FCS playoff appearances, including a trip to the national semifinals in 2019) and a history of working with Pete Kwiatkowski, winning 73 games in six seasons (2006-11) together on the Boise State staff and coaching Washington’s defensive line for two seasons (2014-15) with one-season stints on Mike Leach’s
