The Good: Run game

They were able to tie the game thanks to the run game of the New Orleans Saints. The Saints, helped in part by Alvin Kamara and Taysom Hill, were able to close the gap to three points after trailing 21-0 in the first quarter. Hill and Kamara combined for over 100 yards and three touchdowns as the Saints tried to get back into the game. It was a nice effort by the Saints on the ground this week, but the Detroit Lions were able to do just enough to cling on to the win and keep the Saints at bay.
The Bad: Defense
Given that they had allowed more than thirty points in just two games this year, this was likely the defense’s worst performance of the year. The Saints would have had opportunities in this game if the defense had been able to hold the Lions at bay, but they were not aided much by the offense as two mistakes by Derek Carr set up two Lions touchdowns.
The Ugly: Everything about the first quarter
An NFL game seldom ends in the first fifteen minutes, but this week’s matchup may qualify as such. The Saints were already behind 21-0 when they executed their fifth offensive play after Derek Carr’s interception, a 3-and-out, and three defensive blunders that prevented Detroit from reaching the end zone doomed the team from the beginning. On the opening play of the game, Carr threw an interception after missing a wide-open A.T. Perry. The Saints are losing games in part because of his persistently subpar performance.
