After seeing the film of the 49ers game, Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni returned to work on Monday and gained some additional understanding of the team’s defensive shortcomings and lack of a run game. Additionally, he discussed Shaquille Leonard’s decision to join the Eagles and why he’s a valuable depth addition to the current LB group with reporters.
The head coach said the following:
Evidently quite happy about that. With some of the injuries we’ve had there, we just think he gives our squad more depth.
Having said that, I thought Christian Elliss had a solid performance in the game yesterday. However, he just adds a little more context by taking us through a scene in which we’ve suffered some regrettable injuries.
Sirianni continued, mentioning how much he values his ties with Leonard and the other members of the Colts organization and how confident they are in the player and person they are receiving.
In addition to relying on his first-hand experience with Leonard and the other staff members who are familiar with him, Sirianni also drew on his connections with former Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen, who is currently the head coach of Indianapolis, and other defensive coaches in the area. The head coach, who has a bond with the linebacker, passed the phone to coaches Marcus Brady, Jason Michael, and Kevin Patullo when he FaceTimed Leonard last week.
We are confident that we are selecting the best leader and individual for the job. And based on the footage, we remain confident that he can still play. He has been a top player in this league for a very long time—in his debut year, 2018 to be exact. Three times being an all-pro player is a long time to be a player. Has the ability to take the ball away even now. Has the ability to run and strike the ball carrier still. Still needs to throw hard in the passing lane due to his length.
Notwithstanding his enthusiasm, Sirianni made quick to clarify that, despite their lackluster performance on Sunday, he still liked the linebackers they currently had on the squad. Leonard, however, will be a valuable addition.
When the head coach was asked if Leonard would play against the Cowboys on Sunday, Sirianni declined to give the linebacker any expectations before he even arrived at the stadium. He is aware of Leonard’s intelligence and diligence, but they must consider the bigger picture and ensure that their requests of him are reasonable.
When asked about the 49ers’ high yards after catch on Sunday in response to their defensive woes in Week 13, Siriannini noted that the team was doing a good job of getting players the ball in space. He gave Kyle Shanahan credit for making several wise decisions that surprised the Eagles, such as setting up a screen for Deebo Samuel when

A few players stated that they were put in difficult situations by the defensive call, particularly with all of the pre- and at-the-snap actions. According to Sirianni, the most important thing is to make sure they are very specific when coaching each guy’s job requirements and that they know how to react to particular looks.
“The goal when facing a squad that performs frequently like that is to make sure everyone is in agreement. That, in my opinion, is the area where we simply didn’t do a good enough job of ensuring that everyone understood “hey, all the little different things to the different motions they could do.”
All we need to do is improve the players’ circumstances so they can win. When I said that, I was aware of the strategy and the experiences we were having. That’s not directed at Sean [Desai] in any way. I am that. I’m thinking to myself in the mirror, “Maybe this was a bit too much in this one.” We need to get into a little more detail on this one right now.
Regarding the lack of a run game, Sirianni mentioned that Kenny Gainwell was seeing more snaps than D’Andre Swift. She pointed out that Gainwell has been their two-minute and third-down back, and Sunday saw more of those circumstances, which produced those results.
Regarding the run game, we are aware that we must
But in order to relieve strain on everyone, we coaches need to improve and dedicate more time to the run game. Therefore, it is without a doubt that we must take that action, as we examined it yesterday.Other noteworthys
After the game, Sirianni mentioned that he did approach Kyle Shanahan to express his respect for his team and to talk about what had happened that resulted in Big Dom and Dre Greenlaw being dismissed. Although the head coach is aware that the head of security was only attempting to defuse the situation before it went out of control, he said that he hasn’t heard anything from the league regarding Big Dom’s role.
“I regret that anyone was removed from the game at the end of it.” What was on stage was the play. In that game, there was a lot of emotion. When Dom is attempting to defuse a situation, I’ve seen him have to do that in the past. That’s what he does once more. Yes, I am aware of his true intentions, which are to defuse the situation and put an end to the ongoing events.
