The former winger for Newcastle United had been confirmed dead..
Christian Atsu, a former winger for Newcastle United, was tragically discovered dead among the debris after the earthquake in Turkey. Last week, false reports that the Ghanaian had been located were refuted, despite the story being covered by a number of national media outlets and broadcasters.
But Claire Rupio, his partner, told the BBC that Atsu remained missing. The apartment building where the 31-year-old and a few of his Hatayspor teammates were staying collapsed, trapping them both.
Atsu secured three points against Kasimpasa in the 97th minute with a goal that came just hours before the earthquake. His agent, Nana Sechere, confirmed the heartbreaking news of his passing on social media.
A tweet said, “I have to inform all of your well-wishers that Christian Atsu’s body was tragically recovered this morning. It is with the heaviest of hearts.” “My sincere sympathies are extended to his loved ones and family. This is my chance to express my gratitude to everyone for their kind words and assistance.
“I ask that whilst we make the necessary arrangements, that everyone would please respect the privacy of the family during this very difficult time.
Following the announcement, football fans began to leave tributes. Supporters of Newcastle University lamented the loss of a player who helped Rafa Benitez’s team win the Championship in 2016–17.
The winger joined on loan from Chelsea in the summer of the previous year, then signed a permanent deal. Memorable away goals against Rotherham United and Cardiff City are among the highlights in Toon colors.
