Nick Saban will make his final regular-season appearance on the Crimson Tide Sports Network’s ‘Hey Coach’ radio show Thursday night. With Alabama football poised to face Auburn this weekend in a rivalry game, Saban will preview the Iron Bowl and discuss Thanksgiving.
Saban, along with UA Athletics voice Eli Gold and a media guest, will be broadcasting live from Baumhower’s Victory Grille in Tuscaloosa. Here are some of the highlights of Saban’s appearance.
“As long as it’s not raining, it’s a Wednesday car,” Saban stated of his Lamborghini driving habits.
–“What’s the plan when you’re actually in the football part of it?” What should I do to carry out the plan? That is the procedure you must follow. What is your sense of purpose, then?” Saban stated that players will be concentrating on the game this week while dealing with family expectations, Thanksgiving plans, and any lingering rat poison.
–Saban estimated that he and Miss Terry will host 15 players over for supper tomorrow. If they lived close enough, players may return home.
–Saban agreed with Grand Bay’s Peewee that Alabama’s offensive line improved week after week. Saban went on to praise Auburn’s defensive front, noting it presented a unique challenge compared to other opponents last week.
–Saban is describing his tight ends, pointing out that they all have different abilities. Saban stated Amari Niblack is a good receiving option, but he can’t block like CJ Dippre or Robbie Ouzts.
–“I don’t see it,” Saban remarked of the notion that strangeness reigns supreme everytime UA and Auburn meet. Saban reiterated what he said on Monday: the best team always wins the Iron Bowl.
“It’s the same thing I stated previously when you get anything in your head. People who lose believe they will lose. People who win believe they will win. People who believe strange things happen, believe strange things happen. Strange things don’t really happen. Name a place in the SEC that isn’t difficult to play.”
Saban notably mentioned the 2013 Kick Six game and how UA had three drives in the red zone stall out that would’ve put the game away before Chris Davis settled for a failed field goal.
–“Most of the guys that we recruit understand that this is a big game because it’s a national game,” Saban said when asked if he teaches his players about the Iron Bowl’s history.
–When asked what’s on the menu for tomorrow, Saban said turkey, dressing, ham, and “lots of gravy.” Saban stated that connecting with athletes in a “more natural setting” away from meetings and the practice field is beneficial.
-Saban claims that this year’s players can make him laugh. Saban stated that after commenting on one player’s tights at practice this week, the squad accused him of also wrapping up against the cold. Saban stated that he needed to demonstrate to them that he was not wearing leg warmers or stockings.
“They know how to get on me, don’t think they don’t.”
–“I don’t think players have the same developmental process they once did,” Saban said when questioned about freshmen playing time.
“One of the things we really try to do with our players, and we have a few who violate this and it really irritates me, is you don’t talk to the other team.” In practice, you don’t interact with the other players. In practice, you don’t dog the players because it creates an emotional scenario between you and that player, which could lead to an emotional outburst, an emotional decision, or someone doing something stupid.”
“I despise saying that about any player. I hate to say that about any of our team’s players. The more arrogant you are, the more you believe you are being insulted when someone says anything to you and you react negatively, and horrible things happen.”
