On Friday, Lions coach Dan Campbell addressed the coaching opportunity at his alma institution, Texas A&M, making his first public comment since rumors linked him to the position. Campbell dodged a question about whether Texas A&M contacted him, but he made it obvious that he is not a candidate for the role. “Maybe,” Campbell answered when asked if the Aggies contacted him. “But that’s fine. I know a few individuals there, and I enjoy my school. That is my alma mater, and I want to help them in every way I can, including coaching for them.”

After seeing what he has done with the Lions in growing the team into a legitimate Super Bowl contender, it seems sense that A&M would consider Campbell as a candidate. However, given how well Detroit (7-2) is performing under his supervision, it is understandable that Campbell would be uninterested.

Campbell was then asked what kind of applicant is required to fill the post at his alma mater. “Certainly, the hire is critical. It must be someone who understands the state of Texas, the history of Texas A&M, and the ability to engage with and nurture young people. That’s where it all begins. “Excellent leadership.” Could UTSA’s Jeff Traylor be that coach? The Austin American-Statesman reported on Thursday night that Traylor was interviewed by the Aggies this week. According to the article, Duke coach Mike Elko is also a candidate for the position in College Station.
