Joe Burrow will not play in any more games this season. The Cincinnati Bengals revealed on Friday that their star quarterback suffered a ruptured ligament in his right wrist and will miss the rest of the 2023 season. The injury occurred during the Bengals’ 34-20 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday Night Football and will almost certainly necessitate surgery. Burrow reported feeling a pop in the second quarter before being ruled out just before halftime. For the time being, the Bengals’ backup quarterback, Jake Browning,
will start. “Obviously, when you go down, you have a lot of hopes for what the season will look like, what the end of the season will look like,” Burrow told reporters on Friday, according to the Bengals’ official website. “We were in a good position. We’re in a good place. It’s quite disappointing because you certainly worked so hard to get to this position. Things are starting to change. You’re becoming pretty good, and then something like this happens. There is nothing you can do about it. It’s only a matter of perseverance.”
Burrow tore the ligament when Ravens defensive end Jadeveon Clowney hit him as he was throwing a nine-yard pass to Bengals running back Joe Mixon. “That’s the best guess. You just see how he landed. Clowney kind of lands on top of him and the way he caught his wrist,” Bengals head coach Zac Taylor said. “For him to throw the way he did before that and then the next play really not be able to grab the ball. That seems to make the most sense.”
Burrow has sustained a season-ending injury in Week 11 for the second time in his four-year career. Burrow tore his ACL and MCL in his left knee against Washington in 2020. This year,
Burrow appeared in ten games and completed 66.8 percent of his passes for 2,309 yards, 15 touchdowns, and six interceptions while posting a 91.0 passer rating. He was coming off a season in which he threw for 4,475 yards, 35 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions, finishing fourth in MVP vote. Burrow completed 70.4 percent of his throws in 2021, passing for 4,611 yards, 34 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. He was named Comeback Player of the Year after leading the Bengals to a Super Bowl victory.
