Birmingham City have utilised the loan market well in recent years and the hope will be that they can repeat that trick this summer too. Rumours have been circulating regularly and it was claied at the weekend that Arsenal youngster Rekik was a target.

They state that Rekik is not on the ‘agenda’ at St. Andrew’s despite the fact they would like to add another centre-back.

Rekik has spent time out on loan with Sparta Rotterdam and Wigan Athletic since joining Arsenal’s academy in January 2021.Omar Rekik - Skills, Defending & Passing - Arsenal U23 (21/22) - YouTube

Loan signings next?

Birmingham City are under new ownership at last and the signings that have followed give reason to be excited ahead of the new season. However, after a string of permanent signings on cash deals, it could be that the Blues turn back to the loan market that has served them well in recent windows.

Omar Rekik truth and Birmingham City’s big transfer plans after Dion Sanderson deal

Birmingham City made their seventh summer signing over the weekend after Dion Sanderson finally ended a weeks of speculation by returning to the club permanently.

Blues struck a deal with Wolves to sign Sanderson, 23, on Friday for £2million to conclude a pursuit which started at the end of last season. Sanderson will join up with John Eustace’s squad immediately after they flew back from Spain on Saturday afternoon.

Sanderson takes Blues’ summer tally to seven signings following deals for Tyler Roberts, Koji Miyoshi, Kevin Long, Krystian Bielik, Ethan Laird and Siriki Dembele. Technical director Craig Gardner and his recruitment team have already started looking towards signing number eight.

The squad still needs fleshing out, particularly in defence where Blues are light on experienced options. Eustace has told BirminghamLive that he would like at least one new centre-back, while Blues only have two senior full-backs – and both of them are under 23.
