Finally, tight end Michael Mayer of the Las Vegas Raiders has found the end zone for the first time in his still-young NFL career. The rookie’s first NFL touchdown was also significant, as it gave Las Vegas the lead for good in Sunday night’s 16-12 home win over Zach Wilson and the New York Jets.

Even after the game, Mayer was still buzzing about his touchdown, assuring reporters that he intends to score more.

Notre Dame tight end Michael Mayer surprisingly not selected in first round of NFL draft

“Many, many more to come, hopefully,” Mayer said after the competition, according to the Associated Press (h/t ESPN). “It’s a really special feeling to be able to do that for my teammates and coaches.” This company has been through a lot in the last few weeks.”

While it was only his first NFL score, Mayer is no stranger to hitting the end zone. Mayer scored 18 touchdowns and gained 2,099 yards on 180 receptions while playing for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish for three years.

Mayer, who was drafted in the second round (35th overall) by the Raiders in the 2023 NFL Draft, recorded nine touchdowns and 809 receiving yards on 67 catches in his final year as a Fighting Irish.

With Mayer finally having an impact, he could be in line for a bigger part in the Raiders’ attack, which is only averaging 17.2 points and 275.4 total yards per game, ranking 27th and 31st in the league.

In Week 11, the Raiders will try to win their third game in a row when they face the Miami Dolphins.
