The Cardinals released two running backs after Conner returned to practise after a four-week absence on injured reserve.

In Arizona, James Conner’s injury necessitated some running back reshuffling, but the team’s movements on Thursday indicate that the starter will return. The Cardinals released two running backs after Conner returned to practise after a four-week absence on injured reserve.

According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC2, the team struck an injury settlement with Damien Williams while dismissing Tony Jones Jr. Williams was placed on Arizona’s practise squad’s injured list last week. This transaction re-enters the veteran into free agency.

Williams, 31, has been released through an injury settlement for the second year in a row. Last season, the former Super Bowl starter started for the Falcons but sustained a rib injury in the team’s opener. The Falcons did not use one of their injury activations on Williams during his first season, instead releasing him from IR in December.

Despite impressing the Raiders during Josh Jacobs’ absence from training camp, Williams did not make the team’s 53-man roster. Due to Conner’s injury, the Cardinals signed him in October. Williams, who scored 10 touchdowns as the Chiefs’ Kareem Hunt replacement in the 2018 and 2019 postseasons, appeared in three games with the Cardinals. He gained 43 yards on 11 carries, joining second-year back Keaontay Ingram and rookie undrafted free agent Emari Demercado as Arizona’s ball carriers while Conner was out.
