Newcastle United’s pursuit of Juventus attacker Federico Chiesa is the topic of today’s Premier League transfer gossip roundup. The Magpies have previously been connected with the Italian international, but TuttoJuve reports that they are ‘ready to offer’ more than £52 million to get him to St. James’ Park in January.

Arsenal and Chelsea are also mentioned as prospective suitors, but it is believed that Newcastle are willing to outbid both in order to bring the 26-year-old to the Premier League before the winter transfer window closes. Chiesa’s contract with Turin expires in 2025.

The 3AM Decision: This has two sides to it. To begin, would Chiesa be a decent addition to Newcastle United? Given his enormous talent and international potential, the answer is almost probably a loud ‘yes’. In fact, you could certainly argue that Chiesa would be a terrific signing for pretty much anyone. Second, and maybe more significantly, is Chiesa a must-sign for the Magpies? Most likely not. Eddie Howe has plenty of choices out wide, and with the heart of defence and point of attack being more obvious areas of concern, you’d guess that the £52 million suggested above could be better spent elsewhere.
