Gunners boss Mikel Arteta made numerous changes to the starting XI against West Ham United in the Carabao Cup fourth round. The decision backfired with the club bowing out of the competition

The focus is now back on the league campaign. The Gunners have the opportunity to temporarily go top of the table if they manage to beat Eddie Howe’s side at St James’ Park this evening.

Formation:4-2-3-1

Predicted Line-up:

Aaron Ramsdale started in goal for the midweek Carabao Cup tie. He had a forgettable night with three goals conceded. The Englishman will be replaced by David Raya, who is now the undisputed starter for the Premier League and Champions League games when available.

In defence, we expect two changes from the derby defeat. Jakub Kiwior should make way for William Saliba to partner Gabriel Magalhaes in the heart of the defence. Oleksandr Zinchenko could be dropped for Takehiro Tomiyasu at left-back.

The Japanese has been in fine form for most of the campaign and was recently voted as the club’s Player of the Month. At right-back, Ben White is a nailed-on starter with no competition, particularly if Tomiyasu starts on the opposite end.

In midfield, there should be a double change from the Hammers clash. Jorginho should continue in the number six role but both Kai Havertz and Fabio Vieira could be dropped. Havertz came close to scoring with a header, but was ineffective thereafter.

Vieira was likewise not involved in the game until his late assist for Martin Odegaard’s goal. The duo should be replaced with Declan Rice and Odegaard. The latter scored in his short cameo at the London Stadium and looks set to start after nursing a niggle.

Further forward, Arteta should go with his best combination at the moment. Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli are expected to replace Reiss Nelson and Leandro Trossard out wide. Eddie Nketiah will lead the line after his first career hat-trick last weekend.
