BirminghamLive provides the most recent Aston Villa news as Mainz decides what to do with Anwar El Ghazi after suspending him for a social media post about the situation in Israel and Gaza.

Mainz is reportedly going to terminate the contract of former Aston Villa winger Anwar El Ghazi due to a social media post he made regarding the conflict between Israel and Gaza.

On October 17, the Bundesliga team deemed El Ghazi’s post “unacceptable” and suspended the winger. “Mainz has relieved Anwar El Ghazi of his training and matchday-related duties,” the club said in a statement at the time. The decision was made in response to a social media post that the 28-year-old removed after it was published on Sunday night.

El Ghazi expressed an opinion on the ongoing Middle East conflict in the post that the club found unacceptable. The player and the club had a lengthy conversation before coming to this decision. Mainz acknowledges that different people have different viewpoints regarding the intricate, multi-decade conflict in the Middle East. The club is separating itself from the offending social media post’s content, though, since it does not reflect the club’s values.”

El Ghazi joined the team last month, and according to BBC Sport, he has since been informed that his contract will be terminated. The Villa favorite posted a statement on the social media network X.

“I condemn the killing of all innocent civilians in Palestine and Israel,” he wrote in his letter. Regardless of their nationality, my thoughts and prayers are with the innocent victims of this conflict. I firmly believe in the Middle East becoming a peaceful and cohesive region.

“To the extend my previous statements on social media have been misunderstood, I would like to make clear that I stand for peace and humanity for all.”
