For Newcastle United, Joe Willock’s long-term injury absence is almost over.

Newcastle hasn’t used the 24-year-old midfielder since he sustained a hamstring injury against Brighton & Hove Albion in May. Willock’s ability to return to the first team has been hindered by setbacks and a more recent Achilles injury.

Eddie Howe, the head coach of Newcastle, is eager to see the midfield player, who participated in 43 games in all competitions for his team the previous season, get back to playing.Howe said in his pre-game press conference, “I want him back.” He’s trained with the group for the first time this week, but he’s a big player for us and it’s definitely too early to include him in the matchday squad.

Newcastle’s next game is a Champions League home encounter against Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday night (8 p.m. kickoff). On Saturday, United will play Wolverhampton Wanderers (5:30 p.m. kickoff). The Magpies will play Manchester United at Old Trafford in the Carabao Cup fourth round next week (8:15 p.m. kickoff), and on Saturday, they will host Arsenal at St. James’ Park in the Premier League (5:30 p.m. kickoff).

After the second international break of the season, Premier League football returns, and Newcastle will visit Palace, who are just one spot and one point below them in the standings.

The Magpies’ current unbeaten streak in all competitions will reach eight games if they can avoid losing to the Eagles.

Before the game, Eddie Howe does have to deal with a few selection headaches, but they are nothing compared to his opponent.

While the international break has somewhat reduced the strain on the medical staff, Palace is still facing a significant injury crisis. They still have a number of injury concerns to address.
