Collingwood Magpies trounced Geelong Cats by 22 points at the MCG in a night of devastation.
Jeremy Howe, a Pies defender, was critically hurt in a brutal mid-air collision with opponent Tyson Stengle in the third quarter. After putting his body on the line to ruin the ball, Howe landed awkwardly on his left arm, looking upset.
The 32-year-old had his arm, which is appears likely to be broken, tended to on the ground before play was stopped for several minutes as the defender was taken from the field on a stretcher.
All of Howe’s teammates, as well as a few members from the opposition, came to the gurney to show the club veteran a sign of comfort.
Stengle also left the field and entered the league’s concussion protocols. Howe was taken from the MCG in an ambulance, accompanied by family members.
Because of the incident’s graphic nature, no replays were show by the host broadcasters.
Earlier, Geelong star Tom Stewart was subbed out of the match after sustaining a knee injury.
Stewart came from the ground during the first quarter after sliding awkwardly. He later emerged from the rooms with his knee heavily strapped, however he did not return to the field.
“The strapping on Tom Stewart’s knee is actually wonderful news for Geelong regardless of his immediate future in the next four-to-six weeks,” Herald Sun reporter Jon Ralph explained on Fox Footy.
“He would’ve immediately had that ACL test, which is a 95 per cent accurate test, the medial ligament injuries are most likely strapped up, so the fact he failed that quarter-time test indicates it could be in that two-to-four week region.”
Further injury scares to Sam De Koning and Tom Hawkins throughout the match could also prove a headache for Geelong.
“The casualty ward is building for the Cats,” Jonathan Brown told Fox Footy.
